In today's email: preparing for the worst, a must watch Hulu docuseries, blow dry styling and being featured on the New York Times.

Behind the Chair | business tips

Do you have Disability Insurance? This week I heard a very sad story about a barber who had a stroke that paralyzed the left side of their body. As you could imagine, it is extremely difficult for this barber to cut hair. Since they did not have disability insurance, they are having a very difficult time financially providing for themselves. Disability Insurance would have been a game changer in this situation.

Disability Insurance provides financial protection in the event that you become disabled and are unable to work due to an injury, illness, or other conditions. It is designed to replace a portion of your income and help you meet your financial needs during the period of disability. If you don’t have DI, I highly recommend looking into applying. Better safe than sorry.

Hulu released a new documentary series called “The Hair Tales”. It is about Black women, beauty and identity through the distinctive lens of Black hair. From executive producers Tracee Ellis Ross and Michaela Angela Davis, “The Hair Tales” leads the audience through a revelatory journey of connecting the personal tales of phenomenal Black women (Oprah & Issa Rae to name a couple) to broader societal and historic themes. The stories shared in the series offer an honest and layered look into the complex culture of Black hair and ultimately Black women’s identity, creativity and contributions to society.

I bring this up because these stories have significantly impacted my view of service. Understanding the complexity of our clients relationship with their hair, can help us to better serve them. If you have a Hulu subscription, definitely check it out.

In order to achieve the final look, many barbers are embracing the value of their blow dryer. It should be used for more than just blow drying hair off the cape and onto the ground. Depending on the desired style, you may reach for different attachments and brushes. If you’re looking to upgrade your blow dryer, make sure it comes with a diffuser and concentrator. Here are a few of the top blow dryers out right now: JRL Forte Pro, BabylissPro Influencer Series and the Dyson Supersonic.

On the Shelf | trending products

This is a product to consider adding to your magazine shelf in the waiting area. The New York Times just dropped an article called "Inside the Life of Influencer Barbers". It featured 3 G.O.A.T.S in barbering: Marcus Harvey (@themarcusharvey), Vince Garcia (@vincethebarber) and Lionel Harris (@brownie_blendz). I hope this is the start of seeing more barber stories being featured on national platforms like NYT. I felt an immense sense of pride reading the article. I hope you do too.
